Most brace treatments in the UK take between 12 and 24 months. Simple alignment corrections with limited tooth movement may complete in under 12 months, while cases involving significant crowding, bite correction, or tooth rotations typically take 18 to 24 months or longer.

The complexity of your case is the single biggest factor. A clinician assessing your teeth can give you a realistic estimate based on how much movement is required, whether bite correction is needed, and how the teeth are likely to respond to treatment.

The type of brace used has a smaller impact on overall treatment duration than many patients expect. Some studies suggest self-ligating braces may reduce the number of adjustment appointments needed, but the total treatment time is more determined by case complexity than appliance type.

Compliance also plays a role. Missing adjustment appointments can extend treatment time, as can bracket or wire damage that requires emergency visits rather than planned adjustments. Keeping teeth clean and following your clinician's advice helps treatment progress as expected.

After the active treatment phase ends, braces are removed and retainers are fitted. Retainers hold the teeth in their new position while the surrounding bone and tissue stabilise. Fixed retainers are bonded behind the teeth; removable retainers are worn at night. Both are important parts of the treatment outcome and should not be neglected.
