NHS Orthodontic Treatment
NHS orthodontic treatment is available in the UK, but it is rationed. Only patients who meet a clinical need threshold — measured by the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) — qualify. Most adults do not qualify. For children and teenagers, eligibility is more common, but waiting lists in many areas now run to 2–5 years.
These guides explain how the NHS system works, what your IOTN score means, what you can expect to pay on the NHS, and how private orthodontic treatment compares.
