The three main types of retainer used in the UK after orthodontic treatment are fixed (bonded) retainers, Essix (clear plastic) retainers, and Hawley retainers. Each has different characteristics that suit different cases and lifestyles.

Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded permanently to the back of the front teeth. They are typically used on the lower front teeth and provide continuous retention without any daily effort from the patient. The main disadvantage is that they require careful cleaning using a floss threader or interdental brushes, and they can occasionally debond if a bracket or section of wire comes loose.

Essix retainers are clear plastic trays similar in appearance to aligner trays. They fit snugly over the teeth and are worn at night or as directed. They are transparent, comfortable, and easy to clean, though they can crack, warp if exposed to heat, or lose shape over time. Replacement is straightforward but involves a new impression or scan.

Hawley retainers use an acrylic base that sits against the roof of the mouth or floor of the mouth, with a wire that runs across the front of the teeth. They are more durable than Essix retainers and can be adjusted by a clinician if needed. They are more visible when worn and less commonly used than previously, but remain appropriate for some cases.

Many clinicians combine retainer types. A common approach is to use a fixed wire on the lower front teeth and a removable Essix tray on the upper arch. This provides robust lower retention while keeping the upper system easy to clean and replace.
