Common signs of a wire problem
Immediate relief — what you can try at home
If the wire end is poking your cheek, roll a small piece of orthodontic wax into a ball and press it firmly over the sharp end. This cushions the area while you arrange advice from your clinician.
If the wire has slipped out of the tube at the back (usually a molar tube), you may be able to carefully tuck it back in using the eraser end of a clean pencil. Do not force it. If the wire is causing significant discomfort and you cannot manage it with wax, contact your clinic to discuss whether you need an emergency appointment.
Can I cut the wire myself?
In a true emergency where wax is not available and you cannot reach a clinician, some patients cut a protruding wire end using small nail clippers that have been sterilised with alcohol. This should only be done as a last resort. Always report what has happened to your clinician afterwards so they can assess the wire at your next visit.
Why does a wire stick out?
As teeth move during orthodontic treatment, the archwire can appear to slide backward and expose its end past the last bracket. This is actually a sign that your teeth are moving well — but the exposed wire end needs to be tucked in or trimmed by your clinician.
How to get help online
Use our online triage form to upload a photo of the wire and describe the problem. A clinician will review it and advise whether you need an urgent appointment, a minor in-clinic adjustment, or whether wax is sufficient for now.
