Signs your bracket may be loose
Is a loose bracket an emergency?
Not usually. A loose bracket will not cause immediate harm and does not typically need same-day attention. However, a bracket that is not bonded to the tooth cannot apply pressure, which means tooth movement in that area will pause. The sooner it is re-bonded, the less disruption there will be to your treatment progress.
What to do at home
Leave the loose bracket on the wire if it is not causing discomfort. Do not try to pull it off or reattach it yourself. If the bracket is uncomfortable or rubbing against your cheek, apply orthodontic wax to cushion it. Avoid hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the bracket further.
Why do brackets come loose?
Hard foods: biting into apples, crusty bread, or hard sweets places excessive force on brackets.
Sticky foods: toffees, chewing gum, and chewy sweets pull at brackets.
Nail biting or pen chewing: habits that stress the bracket bond.
Sports impact: a knock to the mouth from sports or activity.
Natural debonding: occasionally brackets lose bond without an obvious cause.
How to get clinician advice
Use our online support form to submit a photo of the loose bracket and describe which tooth is affected. A clinician will review your submission and advise whether you need an urgent repair appointment or whether it can wait until your next scheduled visit.
